Are you inspecting going on a house vacation overseas, but are unsure of what passports cost, or even what the policy of getting one involves? While there are still some countries that do not need you to have a passport in order to enter, most will all request one for entry. Mexico and Canada are two that don't need a passport and will allow you to enter with a birth certificate, but having a passport will right on make things much easier. All in all, a passports cost is worth your peace of mind alone. If you've ever had the misfortune of being held up do to legal identification papers, you know what I mean.

Ok, so what are we seeing at for costs here? A passport will literally have two separate fees associated with it. The first fee is the passport processing fee that the U.S. State group charges. Currently, passports cost .00 for adults, and .00 for any child under 16 years old. They have recently went up due to adding a protection surcharge.

The second fee is called the performance fee and it covers the cost of manufacture the passport. The processing fee and the protection surcharge are paid to the U.S. State Department. The performance fee is paid to the factory you are purchasing your passport from. You can pay with cash, checks, money orders, or credit cards.

It's easy to apply for a passport. You can download the required forms from the official State group website. Fill them out, and then go have 2 photo id pictures taken at any authorized merchant. Walgreens, or Eckerd Drugs are just two places that come to mind immediately. The cost will ordinarily be less than . After being so concerned about getting to the train station and all that's involved with getting our prepaid tickets, that all went very well. There was a slight problem because the credit card I used to make the reservation was stolen. The rail company insisted I use the same credit card. We worked that out without too much problem. Then things got interesting. I had copied the wrong correspondence from the tour guide in Giverny and recalled the opposite of their instructions as to where to meet at the site of Monet's farm. There's more to this story than I want to get into right now. Suffice to say that we saw a lot of flowers and they were super pretty, but we did not get on the farm and we did not have a tour. We couldn't find the tour guide, partly because there were lots of people there. We did make it back to Paris after about an hour in Giverny. Maybe next time we're here we will try again. The son was probably too confused to know how to go to the police and file a report. You must speak and understand fluent French in order to do this, true. And show your valid ID (passport, stamped and dated upon your arrival) -- you must carry it on you at all times here. Always leave a photocopy of all the pertinent pages with someone you trust who could fax it to the Consulate. If you pay in your local currency and have a photocopy, for American passports, the replacement fee is less and it only takes a few hours. You will have to go out and buy biometric ID photos, and you cannot smile, and your ears must show. No glasses allowed. At the US Consulate in Paris, which is quite a zoo these days and you cannot carry in food nor water and there are no restroom facilities anymore, I've met quite a few people who'd had everything stolen and getting a new passport was costly, took days, and they missed their return flights. Keep a spare photocopy in your luggage, also, of course. You can't be too careful. Even if you find a "taxiphone," the computers there are not secure and the deyboards are azerty. When it did we were pushed out of the airport in the cold dark and drizzly morning (6am) to find our hotel. They took pity on us and let us check in to shower and change. But then it was out walking - for the next five days. As our accommodation was in the historic centre of Paris we could walk to all the major landmarks. On the first day we walked to the Arc de Triomphe along the Champs Elysee to ward off jet lag and to get our bearings. Also on this day we discovered one thing we were warned about and found everywhere - beggars and hawkers. Beggars are mostly of the "Bosnian refugee" variety that ask you if you speak English (ie are you a dumb tourist?) and thrust a card at you explaining their plight. After the first time you learn to firmly say "non" in your best French accent. In case you think this is harsh and perhaps they are genuine refugees we actually saw proof that they are organised by someone. On our way to Rue Clare we passed a Bosnian lady bent over double begging. After walking briskly for 2 kilometres she appeared ahead of us - clearly being moved around by her handler. This is an improvisation I recorded over the weekend (2009-10-18). I hope you enjoy - it's potential music for a new musical I'm writing. This piece describes for me the sound of glaciers melting into rivers that shred Greenland ice. The photos are very special to me - I highly recommend looking at all of them. They are from my favorite museum in my year in Paris, le Musée Rodin, which has Auguste Rodin's artwork and the house he lived in near les Invalides. This was a very special place for me. I could get in for free with my Arts student card, and would often sit in the garden and read, tourist-watch, or consider my quarter-life crisis. I felt lonely then and these moments were very happy. As I recall, I thought I had been stood up by a "date" as I was taking these pictures. Unbeknowst to me, the girl was sitting in one of the benches in the garden.
