When it did we were pushed out of the airport in the cold dark and drizzly morning (6am) to find our hotel. They took pity on us and let us check in to shower and change. But then it was out walking - for the next five days. As our accommodation was in the historic centre of Paris we could walk to all the major landmarks. On the first day we walked to the Arc de Triomphe along the Champs Elysee to ward off jet lag and to get our bearings. Also on this day we discovered one thing we were warned about and found everywhere - beggars and hawkers. Beggars are mostly of the "Bosnian refugee" variety that ask you if you speak English (ie are you a dumb tourist?) and thrust a card at you explaining their plight. After the first time you learn to firmly say "non" in your best French accent. In case you think this is harsh and perhaps they are genuine refugees we actually saw proof that they are organised by someone. On our way to Rue Clare we passed a Bosnian lady bent over double begging. After walking briskly for 2 kilometres she appeared ahead of us - clearly being moved around by her handler.
