Entry: "After a 24-hour bus trip I finally arrived at the Gallieni bus station, where I purchased a Travel Pass Paris card to be able to, well, travel in Paris. I caught 'line 3' metro, which was quite easy since there is only one line in Gallieni, and it goes in just one direction: the city centre. I still had plenty of time left so I spent my first hour in the capital of France wandering around the Gare du Nord station, asking in rather poor French for a city map in the Tourist Information, ordering an overpriced cup of tea in one of the cafes and inventing less or more interesting reasons why my friend, who was supposed to pick me up and put me up for a few nights, would not show up. Anyway, she arrived on time and took me to the apartment where I dropped my luggage, and almost immediately we left to see the city. We started with the Quartier Latin: La Seine, Ile St-Louis, Notre Dame, Saint-Chapelle, Palais de Justice, Sorbonne, Pantheon and Jardin du Luxembourg. It was a beautiful, sunny Friday and everyone in Paris seemed to have the very same idea of spending their time strolling along the river, engaging in window shopping in the narrow streets of the island, queuing in front of the Notre Dame cathedral and buying a hot sandwich in one ...

Entry from: Blois, France Entry Title: "Chateau and the Loire Valley" Entry: "Someone left the American to French power adapter in our last hotel (me - Anthony), so this update is a bit delayed. We finally found a store that sold the adapters and bought two in case this happens again. They were actually cheaper here than in the states. We took the train from Rennes to Blois to stay for two days in the Loire Valley. Actually, we missed our first train because the automatic ticket machines don't recognize American credit cards (neither do the gas stations). I had bought tickets already, but we needed to print them and the machine requires you to scan your credit card. I finally found a ticket window that was open and we got our tickets printed, but it was too late to make our train. We took a later train, but it was slower and cost us 2 hours all together. We picked up our rental car and drove to our hotel in Blois. Blois is a pretty neat town, we are just about 2 blocks from the city center. There are lots of great shops plus an old cathedral and chateau in town, neither of which we saw from the inside during our two days here (visited other nearby chateau). The only problem with the shopping is that the French like to close their shops early and by the time we get back into town they are only open for ...

We hired a tuk tuk and got it to drive us roughly 30kms out of town to Buddha Park. On the way we also stopped at Wat Si Muang where legend has it that when the city spire was to be laid a sacrifice was required. No one volunteered until a pregnant lady stepped into the hole and was subsequently crushed. We then proceeded along the dodgey road to Buddha Park. The park was full of sculptures of Budhist and Hindu gods. You could even crawl inside the "mouth" of one of the huge sculptures. It was designed to depict you entering hell then as you climbed up to the top, you were ascending to heaven. Inside was a bit creepy as the lights were off. We used a torch to explore inside. The top also gave a great view of the park and a very large reclining Buddha. Back in Vientiane we checked out the Royal Palace, though you can not go in. We then wandered around, passed the old That Dam, then on to the Thong Khan Kham Market (but thankfully didn't buy anything). Next was the Patuxai or Victory Monument. It looked like the Arch de Triomphe in Paris. Evidently it was made of concrete donated by the USA for a new runway after the American War. Up ...

We have just under 2 days to go before we leave this green and pleasant land. Everything is sorted (well almost!), we have booked the trains up to Siberia and saved loads of moolah by booking direct on the Russian train website. We had a funny experience trying to book the train from Vladimir to Nizhny Novgorod as the translate tool was calling Gorky (the train station in Nizhny) the painful one! Obviously the Russian train website did not recognize the train station called "the painful one!" Oh well, the more i don't understand the better but i am strange like that! My Parents have booked their flights to Thailand to meet us for Christmas, New Year and my birthday, so we are well excited about that. We have had a few leaving parties over the last few days and will miss you all! Hopefully some of you can fly out and meet us somewhere. We have one more leaving party tonight in Birmingham which will inevitably be messy! ha ha. Before i forget we have just brought a worldwide sim card so you can text us and call us. There's a much shorter line to buy tickets. As long as you pay by credit card (which is what I wanted to do), you can use one of the automated machines to get your tickets. This might have been useful to know before standing in the regular line for 25 minutes. 3. The inverted underground pyramid is not actually inside the admission-paid area of the Louvre. The thing is actually in the mall-like area you walk through from the Metro before you get to the ticket purchasing lines. You'd think that they would want to be a little more protective of the final resting place of Mary Magdalene. (Little "Da Vinci Code" reference there for you. No, I don't agree with the concept of the book or movie, and no, I don't believe Mary Magdalene is buried at the Louvre. Today my plans were not quite fulfilled, due to my own oversight. After being so concerned about getting to the train station and all that's involved with getting our prepaid tickets, that all went very well. There was a slight problem because the credit card I used to make the reservation was stolen. The rail company insisted I use the same credit card. We worked that out without too much problem. Then things got interesting. I had copied the wrong correspondence from the tour guide in Giverny and recalled the opposite of their instructions as to where to meet at the site of Monet's farm. There's more to this story than I want to get into right now. Suffice to say that we saw a lot of flowers and they were super pretty, but we did not get on the farm and we did not have a tour. We couldn't find the tour guide, partly because there were lots of people there. We did make it back to Paris after about an hour in Giverny. Maybe next time we're here we will try again. When it did we were pushed out of the airport in the cold dark and drizzly morning (6am) to find our hotel. They took pity on us and let us check in to shower and change. But then it was out walking - for the next five days. As our accommodation was in the historic centre of Paris we could walk to all the major landmarks. On the first day we walked to the Arc de Triomphe along the Champs Elysee to ward off jet lag and to get our bearings. Also on this day we discovered one thing we were warned about and found everywhere - beggars and hawkers. Beggars are mostly of the "Bosnian refugee" variety that ask you if you speak English (ie are you a dumb tourist?) and thrust a card at you explaining their plight. After the first time you learn to firmly say "non" in your best French accent. In case you think this is harsh and perhaps they are genuine refugees we actually saw proof that they are organised by someone. On our way to Rue Clare we passed a Bosnian lady bent over double begging. After walking briskly for 2 kilometres she appeared ahead of us - clearly being moved around by her handler. I think I'm finally getting over the jetlag. It feels like all I've really been doing the last few days is SLEEP! But right now I truly feel rested. My presessional classes start this week, so I think that will help, getting into a routine and all. My bus tour yesterday was great! It gave me a taste of what life in Glasgow can be. The tour included a couple stops to museums like the museum of transportation and the Burrell collection. Get this: all musuems are free in scotland! :) I'll definitely be taking advantage of that! Only just caught the Eurostar, after a mad dash across London in a taxi - the bits of the Underground I wanted to use were closed :( Still, made it to Paris, had just enough time to grab a sandwich, then onto the Thalys high-speed train to Cologne. Was not that impressed with Cologne, apart from the Dom - a HUGE gothic cathedral, right next to the station. For one thing, what were they thinking about, building this ugly station/shopping/cafe complex literally a few feet away from such a stunning building... But Cologne was only an overnight stop, so onto Berlin, arrived here yesterday afternoon and loved it the minute I stepped out of the station - it just looks so bright, open and vibrant. Within a couple of hours of arriving I was at the top of the Reichstag dome - I've always loved that building, but didn't know you could go to top of it - amazing views! Today I've taken a look at the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz, eventually found someone who could take a decent picture of me in front of it - but sadly I can't upload pictures from this internet cafe - it's in a 'Dunkin Donuts' and you can't seem to get access to the computers to stick a memory card in (great iced ...
